Applying for UC Berkeley Jobs: Dos & Don'ts

When applying for UC Berkeley jobs, make sure to follow these guidelines.

DOs:

  • Submit a cover letter stating the reasons why you are interested and how you meet the required qualifications as listed in the job description - in a brief summary form
  • Be proactive about researching and learning about the department and role you are interested in - prepare for the interview
  • Provide references with your resume
  • Network and ask for informational interviews whether or not there is a current job opening
  • Be proactive - not aggressive - in your communication style and approach
  • Only apply for the jobs when you meet the requirements

DON'Ts:

  • Do not submit your resume directly to the hiring manager; go through the proper online application process
  • Do not feel compelled to keep your resume to one page, unless you have very limited work experience; it's better to have a longer resume than to leave out valuable experience
  • Do not directly approach members of the selection committee to request status updates or information regarding other candidates; selection committee members are responsible for maintaining confidential information related to the search. Instead, follow up with the appointed key contact with any requests for information
  • Do not react in a defensive or negative way to feedback provided; try to be objective and if the feedback does not make sense, ask follow up questions
